All markets are served with strong durable brands, such as CCH in the United States, the largest supplier of products to tax-software products and scientific field; Ovid, the largest online supplier of medical information; and Kluwer, the leader in the Netherlands for information in the areas of legislation and tax.

There are many areas in which a publisher can specialize, such as the aforementioned product categories, but also the information which is written in their products. There are publishers specialized in schoolbooks, literature etc. Many publishers are increasing their activities on the internet, besides their historical activities of printing paper. The business model of a publisher is thereby extended with generating advertisement revenue, in addition to selling books.
