After the merger of Axalto and Gemplus International Holding in 2006, Axalto Holding company adopted the name Gemalto. The new group is active in production and sales of smart cards worldwide. The family of products contains: chip cards, microprocessor cards, scratch cards, magnetic tape and memory cards. Gemalto offers in addition software and accompanying services (consulting, customization, training, etc.). Sectors that Gemalto services are mobile telephony, financial services, public sector and access to networks and prepaid telephony, payment terminals. At the end of 2005, the group managed 12 production sites in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Description
The information technology sector is divided into segments of ICT services and software. The market is characterized by a low concentration of business with some major international corporations and a very large number of smaller local companies. The top of the ICT market is mainly dominated by U.S. companies, which have for long a solid market positions. Because the companies strive for more economies of scale, it is expected that the industry will see some mergers and acquisitions. The companies active in ICT services, provide services to the corporate market as secondment of ICT specialists, integration of ICT equipment and outsourcing. Companies in the software industry are designing software applications and enterprise software, databases and operating software. Because of the ongoing developments in new technologies, software companies are investing quite a lot in research and development.
