Profile
Ahold Delhaize is a group of food retail companies which was created from a merger between Ahold (NL) and Delhaize (BE) in 2016. Ahold Delhaize is one of the world's largest providers of food. Ahold has a large number foodretail and foodservice businesses, which operate under their own name. In the Netherlands, Ahold Delhaize in The Netherlands is inextricably linked with Albert Heijn, the supermarket chain that is named after the founder of Ahold. Albert Heijn took over the shop from his father in Zaandam in 1887. With a clear strategy of delivering quality products and services for an attractive price, Albert Heijn is now a dominant player in the Dutch market. Other brands includes Etos and Gall & Gall. In Europe, Ahold has interests in ICA (Sweden) and Jeronimo Martins (Portugal). In the United States Ahold Delhaize is amongst others, active with Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover, Giant-Carlisle, Tops and U.S. Foodservice.
Industry
Retail (food)
Description
The retail sector (food) consists mainly of large supermarket chains. Most supermarket chains operate internationally, with the United States as the largest market. The markets in Western Europe and North America are fairly saturated, making these markets growing only with a few percent per year. Other markets such as emerging markets are not yet saturated, so consumers may spend more on food each year and the markets are still very fragmented, which may result in consolidation.
